ISLAMABAD: The political showdown over the controversial 27th Amendment Bill escalated on Friday, as opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) issued a stark warning to the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP): oppose the proposed bill or face political ruin.
Speaking at a press conference, senior PTI leader and former National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser launched a scathing critique, declaring that the survival of the PPP depended on resisting the amendment, which is widely viewed as an assault on the landmark 18th Amendment.
He accused the PPP of preparing to “bury its own legacy” if it voted in favor of the 27th Amendment. “The ball is in your court, Bilawal,” Qaiser taunted PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, urging him to “stand against the proposed bill or get ready to be remembered as a villain.”
The warning to the young PPP leader was clear: if he sided with the contentious bill, he would be aligning his party with the “tyrants and dictators” of the country’s past.
The PTI stalwart from Swabi continued to denounce the amendment process as a “constitutional travesty,” emphasizing that the constitution is sacred and calling the abrupt changes to the foundational document “a direct betrayal of democracy.”
He urged the PPP to reconsider its support for the bill, accusing the party of playing a dangerous political game. Qaiser called on the PPP to “protect public politics rather than create drama.”
He also appealed to Bilawal to look beyond party politics and honor the legacies of his late grandfather, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, and his mother, Benazir Bhutto. “Do not distort their glorious history by standing with this regime,” he warned.
Qaiser did not hold back in his condemnation, adding that the generations of Pakistanis who had fought for the constitution were now watching in horror as it was being “broken” by those in power.
Vowing to resist the 27th Amendment at all costs, Qaiser promised that PTI would challenge any such amendments through public demonstrations, legal battles, and parliamentary action.
He reaffirmed that PTI would take the fight to the streets, the courts, and the legislature, pledging to continue fighting for the rights of the people and resisting the 27th Amendment.
