ISLAMABAD: Twelve persons sustained injuries while two are in critical condition, following a blast at the Supreme Court cafeteria, located in the basement of the building.
The injured persons were shifted to the Federal Government Polyclinic and Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS).
The sources shared that the blast occurred during repair work on the building’s central air-conditioning system.
The explosion, which took place at around 11:00 am, caused panic inside the building as the shockwaves shook the Supreme Court premises, prompting lawyers, judges’ staff, and other employees to rush outside for safety.
Among the affected zones was Courtroom No. 6, where a two-judge bench comprising Justice Malik Shahzad Ahmad Khan and Justice Ali BaqarNajafi was hearing the cases.
Law enforcement and emergency personnel swiftly established a security perimeter around the premises. Bomb disposal experts arrived on scene alongside police investigators to determine what triggered the blast.
Inspector General of Police (IGP), Islamabad, Ali Nasir Rizvi, who reached the Supreme Court immediately after the blast, told the media outside the court that gas had been leaking in the canteen for several days, adding that the explosion took place during the repair of the air conditioner. “Experts have also confirmed that it was a gas explosion,” he stated.
