‘Peace cannot be postponed any longer’: Pakistan hails US consultations with Arab, OIC

At the United Nations General Assembly, Pakistan has said recent consultations held by US President Donald Trump with Arab and Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) leaders and announcement made by the United States are noteworthy development.

Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Asim Iftikhar Ahmad in a statement at General Assembly expressed hope that such initiatives can help deliver what is most urgent needed.

At the UNGA – Veto Debate (Palestinian Question), Asim urged the need for an immediate ceasefire, an end to the war, unfettered humanitarian assistance and above all a credible political horizon towards Palestinian statehood.

He said Pakistan, as part of these consultations, will work to ensure that efforts are judged not by promises but by results.

He called for stopping the killing, ending the occupation, reuniting families, rebuilding Gaza and guaranteeing protection and dignity to the Palestinian people.

“Palestinian people are the masters of their own destiny, and that destiny is freedom. Palestinians can no longer be denied their right to self-determination. Peace cannot be postponed any longer,” he said.

The Pakistani envoy said ehen the elected UNSC members tabled a resolution, it was not a routine diplomacy but an urgent effort to answer the cries of a Palestinian people trapped in bombing, rubble, famine and despair. The failure of the Council to move forward due to a veto was bitterly disappointing, he maintained.

“Amid devastation, the voices of conscience have grown louder. There is a ray of hope in the context of the Two-State Solution Conference, recognition of Palestine by more states, and the rising calls worldwide for a ceasefire and a durable solution of the Palestinian question,” he maintained.
