Accepting the plea of the late Nawab Akbar Bugti's son Talal Bugti to become a party to Balochistan law and order situation case, Supreme Court on Thursday sought a weekly report from IG Police over progress in cases of enforced disappearances, ransom and compensation to the heirs of perished people in Balochistan.
A three-member bench comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Jawwad S.Khawaja and Justice Khilji Arif Hussain, was hearing a constitutional petition filed by President Balochistan High Court Bar Association over Balochistan's law and order situation.
During the course of proceedings, the counsel for former Chief Minister Balochistan Sardar Akhtar Mengal submitted that his client was undergoing medical treatment abroad and expected to return by September 26. Observing that Mengal could provide some valuable help to court in relation to the case of enforced disappearances or 'missing persons', the Chief Justice directed the federal Interior Secretary and Inspector General Police Islamabad to put foolproof security in place for Mengal during his stay in Islamabad. The CJP assured the counsel for Mengal that Registrar Supreme Court would personally oversee security arrangements for Mengal.
Appointing four senior lawyers as amici curiae in the instant matter Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry asked Munir A Malik, S.M. Zafar, Vice Chairman Pakistan Bar Council Akhtar Hussain and President Supreme Court Bar Association Yasin Azad to obtain copies to study the case. The bench observed that court would hear the arguments of Sardar Akhtar Mengal at Islamabad and then the case would be fixed for hearing at Quetta Registry on October 8. Subsequently, the hearing was adjourned till September 27.
