RIYADH: On Tuesday, Saudi Arabia announced fresh measures for the upcoming annual Umrah pilgrimage, which was suspended due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

As part of the COVID-19 precautionary measures, the barricade placed around the Kaaba will remain in its place, and visitors will not be allowed to touch the Black Stone (or Hajar-al-Aswad), while according to the SPA, Masjid al-Haram will be disinfected 10 times a day, and quarantine facilities are already prepared for any visitors showing signs of symptoms.

Furthermore, Saudi Arabia announced last week that it will be gradually lifting their COVID-related travel ban for the Umrah pilgrimage, after a long six month hiatus - as of October the 4th Saudis and foreign residents of the kingdom will be allowed to perform Umrah at a capacity of 6000 people (30%) per day. In addition, as of October the 18th, the Kingdom will allow 15,000 pilgrims per day to perform Umrah in Medina.
