Govt fully aware of peoples' suffering, will not abandon them in time of crisis: PM

  • Imran Khan says government will also announce a plan to address the issue of flooding in Karachi on permanent basis
Published Updated

(Karachi) Prime Minister Imran Khan has said that the government will not abandon the people of Karachi in their time of crisis. He added the government is fully aware of the suffering of people in wake of monsoon rains.

In a series of tweets on Thursday, the prime minister said, "I am personally monitoring the relief & rescue operations & am in constant contact with Chairman NDMA & Governor Sindh for regular updates."

Imran maintained that he has given instructions to NDMA chief to immediately rescue people stranded in different areas and provide emergency medical assistance, food and shelter to them. "I have also asked NDMA Chairman to ensure restoration of utilities on an emergency basis," he remarked.

The premier mentioned that the government will also announce a plan to address the issue of flooding on permanent basis. "We will be announcing a plan for a permanent solution to the problems caused by floods by cleaning of nullahs, fixing of the sewage system & resolving the huge challenge of water supply to the people of Karachi," he stated.

Earlier in the day, at least five people lost their lives in different rain-related incidents after heavy downpour lashed the metropolis and interior Sindh.

The city witnessed a heavy monsoon rainfall, throwing normal life out of gear. The city administration miserably failed to drain out water from the streets resulting in chaotic situation. Several houses were flooded with rainwater in different areas while people waded through chest-deep water in the streets. There was water-logging not only in the low-lying vicinities but also in posh localities.

Karachi received more than 300 millimeters of rainfall during the 24-hour period bringing city life to a standstill. The rain again exposed the claims made by the district administration about making sufficient arrangement for preventing water-logging.
