Taiwan stocks hit two-week high

Published Updated

Taiwan stocks ended up 1.64 percent at a near two-week high on Friday after the government revealed its plan to levy a capital gains tax on shares and futures trading, removing uncertainty that had spooked investors. The main TAIEX index advanced 125.35 points to 7,788.27, beating most regional peers and closing at its highest level since early April.
Among the top winning sectors, construction rallied 4.64 percent and electronics was up 1.9 percent. The Taiwan dollar rose by T$0.047 to trade at T$29.503. Doubts over whether the tax would be implemented and its scope had weighed on the main TAIEX and made it one of Asia's worst performers this month.
