Three railway workers were killed in a collision between a passenger train and a track maintenance vehicle in the eastern suburbs of Frankfurt early Friday, police said. Thirteen people were injured, some seriously. Six of them were hospitalised. Police identified the dead as the train driver and two track maintenance workers. "We are guessing they were killed instantly from the impact," said a transport police spokesman at the scene near Muehlheim.
An estimated 35 passengers were aboard the double-decker local train operated by the Deutsche Bahn national rail company when it slammed into the excavator at 1 am (2300 GMT) and dragged it 400 metres before stopping.
