Taiwan stocks rise

Published Updated

Taiwan stocks ended up 0.52 percent on Tuesday after a tax reform panel reached a consensus to levy tax on stock investment gains, removing most of the uncertainty surrounding a move that had spooked investors and prompted a plunge in the local market. The main TAIEX index rose 39.81 points to 7,640.68, recovering from a nine-week closing low in the prior session.
Quanta Computer, the world's biggest contract laptop PC maker, rose 3.15 percent. It reported its March sales results on Monday. Uncertainty over whether the tax will be implemented has dragged the benchmark TAIEX down about 6 percent over the past seven sessions, upsetting investors already nervous over a slow global recovery.
