Industrialists have express concern over the deepening row between Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) and Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB), which started on the issue of electricity dues and resulted in the disconnection of power to water pumping stations.
Urging the Sindh government to intervene for resolving the issue on a priority basis, they said that the city as well as industrial areas would be facing an acute shortage of water if the government failed to resolve the issue. They said industries were already facing a number of issues, including strikes, law and order problems, gas and power shortages, high tax rate, failure to meet local and export orders and the situation should not be allowed to deteriorate.
Karachi received 540 million gallons per day (mgd) of water from River Indus via the Dhabeji Pumping Station, while it got around 100mgd of water from the Hub Dam, located on the Sindh-Balochistan border An industrialist from Korangi Naseem Ahmed said that disconnecting power supply to the Dhabeji Pumping Station would create an acute water shortage in industrial areas of Korangi, Landhi and Bin Qasim.
Nasir Mehmood, another industrialist, said that industrialists could not afford any more setbacks in production levels. He noted that India was providing assistance to its businesses and industrial sector while China providing electricity free to help its industry. Pakistan, he said, should also help out its industrial sector.
