The Government of Japan has provided $6 million to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to support its Afghan refugees operations in Pakistan. A statement issued by the embassy of Japan on Friday said that the current assistance is a part of the Official Development Assistance (ODA) of Japan, totalling $30 million to Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran for UNHCR refugees operations.
The contribution towards Pakistan will be utilised for mainly three component; primary education $2.2 million, primary health care $2.3 million and legal services $1.5 million. It is expected to improve the living standard of 1.7 million Afghan refugees remaining in Pakistan, it added.
Charge d'Affaires ad interim of Japan to Pakistan, Akira KONO said the assistance will contribute to accelerate UNHCR and the Government of Pakistan's efforts to the management and repatriation of Afghan refugees. "We expect synergetic impact on our ongoing assistances for Afghan refugees and their hosting communities in Pakistan," he added.
