A two-day seminar on Pakistan-India Civil Society Review of Strategic Relations has emphasised that people of Kashmir should be made equal stakeholders in the peace process and part of the dialogue process.
In the recommendations formulated at the end of the conference in New Delhi, it has been stated that the civil societies of Pakistan and India should set up study groups to comprehensively analyse the problem of sharing of water in Indus Basin and identifying potential sources of conflict, KMS reported.
The participants urged the two countries to work for a holistic and integrated management of water between them. It has recommended developing a regional framework for sharing of water in the entire Saarc region.
Earlier, speaking at the concluding session, CPM General Secretary Prakash Karat called upon the Indian government to find a solution to the Kashmir issue by talking to both Pakistan and Kashmiris.
The composite dialogue between India and Pakistan should continue and be further broadened, he stressed. Senior leader of Pakistan Peoples Party and lawyer Aitzaz Ahsan said that the Indo-Pak ties could only be improved by following a spirit of positive reciprocity.
Independent member of the so-called Kashmir Assembly, Engineer Rashid, appreciated the forward movement in Pak-India relations. Referring to the efforts made to resolve the Kashmir problem, he said that no formula had worked till todate, because all efforts were bilateral.
