Tokyo rubber rises

Published Updated

Tokyo rubber futures edged higher on Monday, supported by tight supplies on the physical front and as Shanghai rubber inventories were falling, but weaker oil prices limited the rise, dealers said. The benchmark rubber contract on the Tokyo Commodity Exchange for August delivery rose 2.5 yen to settle at 333.1 yen ($4.04) per kg.
The most-active rubber contract on the Shanghai futures exchange for May delivery rose 15 yuan to settle at 28,300 yuan ($4,500) per tonne. The front-month April contract on Singapore's SICOM exchange was last traded at 374.50 US cents per kg, down 1.4 cents.
Rubber inventories in warehouses monitored by the Shanghai Futures Exchange fell 4.8 percent from last Friday, the bourse said on Friday. The rubber supply in Thailand, the world's biggest producer and exporter, was expected to fall as much as 50 percent from normal production of about 250,000 tonnes a month by April due to dry weather that cut latex supplies and forced farmers to stop tapping for a few weeks.
