US-listed shares of overseas companies edged higher on Friday, with mining companies helped by Codelco's report of record copper output for 2011. Chile's Codelco, the world's top copper producer, reported its 2011 pre-tax profit rose 21 percent from a year ago. The company also gave upbeat comments about the current year's outlook.
The BNY Mellon index of leading American Depository Receipts was up 0.34 percent, while the Standard & Poor's 500 index was up 0.31 percent. Shares of fertiliser, lithium and iodine producer Soquimich were up 0.3 percent at $57.97 while shares of global miner BHP Billiton were up 1.24 percent at $71.58.
Among other miners, Brazil's Vale was up 0.5 percent at $22.85. The BNY Mellon index of leading European ADRs was up 0.4 percent, while the FTSEurofirst 300 index of top shares closed down 0.01 percent. The BNY Mellon index of leading Asian ADRs was up 0.15 percent and the BNY Mellon index of leading Latin American ADRs was up 0.6 percent. European banks also were among gainers, including Barclays , up 4.4 percent at $15.82.
