A large number of people from different walks of life especially farming community attended the six-day spring festival started on March 12 at University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF). The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Director Office of Economic Growth and Agriculture (EGA) William M. Patterson also attended the festival on Tuesday.
The UAF festival has brought colour of rural culture and knowledge based events including farmers' convention, agricultural exhibition, flower show, fancy bird show, horse and cattle show, tent pegging, milk competition, cow and buffaloes beauty contest and cultural shows as well as international seminars and conferences.
Vice Chancellor UAF, Professor Dr Iqrar Ahmad Khan and other officials were also present. Other members of USAID delegation were Sajjad Mughal Deputy Director EGA, Kamran Niazi Project Manager EGA, and Asad Khan Project Management Specialist in Agriculture.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Khan said that the festival was aimed at promoting modern agricultural practices and outreach activities keeping in view increasing per acre agrarian production to cope with the food insecurity situation facing the country.
The agricultural exhibition became a source of attraction for the people in which more than 50 stalls were set up by various departments of the university and other agricultural organisation.
Other main attractions for the visitors were stalls depicting the pictures of rural areas with demonstration of rural culture. At the stalls, students presented daily life activities of the womenfolk busy in routine domestic chores. One of the stalls in the agri exhibition was comprising solar energy units in order to promote technology as the country was worst affected by electricity crisis. The other stalls were displaying the modern agri implements in a bid to increase agricultural productivity of the country.
The tent pegging and horse show that was organised at the Race Course Ground of the varsity attracted a large number of horse lovers. In this regard, a horse city was set up at the campus in which dozens of horses have been brought from different parts of the country and displayed before the audience to enthrall them and promote the best breed of horses in the country. The cow and buffaloes competition was also opened at the campus for promoting the best breeds. It is worth mentioning here that the university holds such festival twice in a year and it has become an annual feature. Like last year this year too tens of thousands of people along with their families thronged the festival.
