Police investigators, prosecutors and mayors in cities nation-wide say the New York Police Department is risking access to information it needs to stop terrorism by conducting clandestine surveillance of Muslims in the city and across the Northeast. They cite their experience serving communities with large Muslim or other minority populations that have become isolated by events.
Critics include the current head of the FBI in New Jersey. Special Agent in Charge Michael Ward said this week the spying program has already started to erode communication between authorities and Muslims in northern New Jersey, creating additional risks. That critique has been forcefully rejected by the NYPD and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who has praised the department's tactics as having kept the city safe since the September 11 attacks.
