Pakistan People's Party (PPP) and its allies have endorsed the nominations of Nayyar Bokhari and Sabir Baloch for the post of Chairman and Deputy Chairman of the upper house, respectively. The decision on the candidature for both the top Senate slots was taken at a meeting of heads of allied parties with PPP co-chairman and President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani in the Presidency on Saturday night.
The meeting was attended by Senator Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, Senator Mushahid Hussain Syed, Asfandyar Wali Khan, Senator Afrasiab Khattak, Senator Babar Khan Ghauri, Senator Tahir Mashhadi, Senator Mir Israrullah Zehri, Munir Khan Orakzai and Engr Shaukat Ullah.
PPP leaders Syed Khurshid Shah, Leader of House in Senate Nayyar Hussain Bukhari, Raja Pervez Ashraf, MNA and Spokesperson to the President Farhatullah Babar were also present at the meeting. According to Babar, President Zardari welcomed the allied parties to the meeting and said the PPP wished to nominate Senators Nayyer Hossain Bokhari or Sabir Baloch (from Balochistan) on the slot of Chairman and Deputy Chairman Senate, respectively.
All the allied parties endorsed the suggestion of the President and said they would support the PPP nominees. The allied parties leaders also expressed the hope that both Bokhari and Baloch will be elected unopposed. The meeting also took stock of the latest political situation including the forthcoming address of the President to the Parliament.
