Capital Development Authority (CDA) has failed to check the illegal activity of confiscating roadside for parking by a majority of hotels/guest houses/restaurants located in the capital's commercial as well as residential areas, according to a survey conducted by Business Recorder.
Most of these places of business have grabbed roadside for car parking and deputed security guards who only allow their clients to park on the roadside in front of restaurants under the guise of security. The problem is acute in Blue Area, in Aabpara, Karachi Company, Super, Jinnah Super and other parts of the city. Due to shortage of parking space traffic jams have become a routine matter in several commercial areas of the city.
An official of CDA said that the main reason for growing parking problems in the city is the absence of proper monitoring system in CDA with a number of high-rise buildings allowed to be constructed without adequate parking. He said that according to the CDA's building by laws the Authority can approve a proposed building only if it has enough parking lots.
He said that most of the builders did not follow the design during construction and the CDA failed to monitor and take appropriate mitigating measures in time. During the survey it was observed people routinely use a portion of roads as a parking lot. The official further revealed that a few years ago CDA had planned to construct a parking plaza in the city but this has yet to materialise. A police official said that the increasing parking problems in the seemingly organised city has not only escalated traffic problems but is also one of the major factors responsible for growing car thefts in the federal capital.
