Senior Sindh Minister for Education Pir Mazharul Haq has said that the provincial government would soon appoint 19,000 teachers to reopen more than 3,000 closed schools in Sindh. "To bring about a revolution in education, the system of small education boards will be introduced in Sindh's colleges," the minister said the other day.
The minister announced this while addressing two separate events at Government Kalimori College and Meeran Muhammad Shah High School in Hyderabad.
Haq said that the students in as many as 78 talukas of different districts in Sindh were deprived of higher education due to lack of degree colleges.
Keeping in view the said shortage, he added, the government had earmarked in 2011-12 budget a sum for construction of 23 degree colleges in Sindh.
"Every annual budget of the provincial government will allocate amount for construction of 23 degree colleges," he told.
He said that of more than 47,000 schools in Sindh over 43,000 were regularly imparting education while the rest were shut for different reasons.
Giving a break down of the total number of students obtaining education at the primary, secondary and higher levels in the government schools, the minister said the next provincial budget would set aside funds for construction of 5,000 new schools.
"During the tenure of the past government over 1,100 such schools were built from the government's funding which were meant to serve the purpose of Autaq (guest house) not education," he said.
Haq appreciated the announcement by Governor Sindh Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan of establishing a university in Hyderabad as a welcome step.
He criticised the university teachers saying those who were more interested in politics did not deserve to be called teachers.
"They are government employees yet they work in private organisations and deny right to employment to the unemployed," he said.
Sindh Fisheries Minister Zahid Bhurgari, Additional Secretary Education Riaz Soomro, Director Schools Shamsuddin Dal, Director Colleges Burkat Hyderi and other officials accompanied the minister.
The minister announced Rs 2 million for renovation of a memorial at Government Kalimori College.
