Diabetes, smoking, hypertension and high degree of cholesterol are major causes of heart attack in Pakistan. A 4-year extensive study conducted at Cardiac Surgery Department of Allama Iqbal Medical College and Jinnah Hospital revealed that diabetes, smoking, hypertension and cholesterol have emerged as major causes of heart ailment among the patients of all age groups especially adult male.
Head of the Cardiac Department Professor Dr Tayyab Pasha told APP here Sunday that during February 2008 to January 2012, a total of 608 patients with different types of heart ailments were treated at 13-bed ward of which 5 rooms were dedicated for ICU.
He said that 273 patients including 72 women were operated upon and their history revealed that all of them were suffering from diabetes, chain smoking and hypertension in addition to high degree of cholesterol.
About age group of heart patients, he said that children age group ranging from 5 to 20 years inborn heart complications while patient with valve complications are of the age group of 20 to 60 years and by-pass in the age of 40 to 80. He said that the best way to lead healthy life is to take balance diet, avoid smoking and daily walks according to age group.
Dr Tayyab said that we attained 99.50 percent success rate in open heart surgeries, the highest ratio in Pakistan.
In view of the best medical treatment and post operation care, he said, now patients prefer this hospital because its operation theatres are equipped with the latest medical gadgets. He said that Principal Allama Iqbal Medical College Professor Dr Javed Akram had approached the government for expansion of this 13-bed ward so that all heart patients could be treated.
