Punjab Education Foundation has laid the foundation of an enlightened and prosperous Pakistan by opening the doors of quality education to the deprived strata who cannot access schools due to lack of resources or awareness.
PEF is sponsoring education of as many as 11 lakh (over one million) students in the province and this number will further grow as PEF educational programmes are being extended to accommodate deserving students in all 36 districts.
Chairman PEF, Raja Anwar stated this while addressing PEF partner schools convention at District Council Hall, Multan on Sunday.
Anwar said that PEF model of education has helped child-friendly schooling as measures have been introduced to completely eradicate corporal punishment by introducing various educational interventions. PEF is a symbol of hope and trust for the poor segments of southern Punjab as its major thrust is in southern region, he added.
With a view to improve capacity building of the low-cost partner schoolteachers and heads, PEF provided free training facilities to 65,520 teachers during the period 2008-11 under its Cluster Based Training Programme. Similarly, 15,447 principals were trained in 813 training sessions during the same period under School Leadership Development Programme.
Chairman PEF said that 89 qualified subject specialists have been provided by PEF to 155 low-cost partner schools in 24 districts to teach English and Science. This is part of teaching in clusters by Subject Specialists Programme to improve the standard of teaching. The main theme of the foundation's public private partner programme is to raise the academic standard of partner schools usually set up in poor localities. Therefore, PEF is working to help its partners improve their standards, he added.
Instead of sending their children to workshops or hotels to work in unsafe situations, now the poor have an opportunity to send their children to schools without any fear of fee or textbooks. He said that the goal of prosperity and public welfare state could not be achieved without ensuring 100 percent literacy. Well-to-do people should sponsor educational expenses of poor and needy students around them so that these communities could raise their status through education, he concluded.
