Thousands of laid off workers of the collapsed tractor manufacturing industry are holding a peaceful protest rally within the Millet Tractors factory premises on the Sheikhupura road here today against the imposition of 16 percent GST on tractors today.
Millat Tractors Workers Union, CBA, leaders told Business Recorder here on Sunday that hundreds of thousands of skilled and semi-skilled technicians/workers have been laid off by the tractor manufacturers and vending units across the country after levy of 16 percent GS which has made the farm machinery costlier by Rs 100,000-to Rs 200,000 a piece depending on its horse power.
They lamented that Al-Ghazi Tractors and Millat Tractors companies with the annual production capacity of 72,000 tractors have suspended their production as the farmers do not have disposable cash enough to buy tractors the Zarai Taraqqiati Bank Limited (ZTBL) has stopped advance on tractor loans.
