The European Union this week granted export licences for 352,000 tonnes of soft wheat, taking the total since the beginning of the 2011/12 (July-June) season to 6.5 million tonnes, official data showed on Thursday. The total so far this season compared with 10.1 million tonnes of export licences cleared by the same stage in 2010/11.
EU wheat exports have seen renewed competition from the Black Sea region this season and are now facing an abundant upcoming crop in South America. Of this week's total, the exact same volume as the one granted last week, Germany claimed the largest share of export licences with 133,000 tonnes, ahead of France with 127,000 tonnes, the Netherlands with nearly 40,000 tonnes, Romania with 24,000 tonnes and 18,000 tonnes in Lithuania. The EU also granted this week licences to export 81,000 tonnes of barley, bringing the total this season to 1.95 million tonnes compared to 2.6 million tonnes at the same stage last season, the data showed.
Of this week's award, 71,000 tonnes were requested in Germany. For maize, the EU granted 35,000 tonnes of licences this week, bringing the total this season to 1.5 million tonnes. Over the same period import licences rose by 190,000 tonnes, which brought the total volume to 1.6 million this season, thereby making the EU a net importer of maize for the first time this season.
