India defeated the West Indies by one wicket in the opening One-day international at the Barabati stadium in Cuttack on Tuesday to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. The hosts reached the 212-run target with seven balls to spare in the day-night match, with Rohit Sharma top-scoring with an impressive 72. Earlier, India put in a disciplined bowling performance to restrict the West Indies to 211-9 despite Darren Bravo's impressive 60.
Left-handed Bravo, who hit two hundreds in the recent Test series against the hosts, cracked six fours in his sixth One-day half-century before being bowled by part-time spinner Suresh Raina. The tourists were struggling at 52-3 before Bravo steadied the innings with a 75-run stand for the fourth wicket with Danza Hyatt (31) in the day-night match watched by 45,000 spectators at the Barabati stadium in Cuttack. The West Indies failed to build on Bravo's effort and they added just 44 runs in the last 10 overs, with tailender Andre Russell making a 20-ball 22. Indian pacemen Umesh Yadav and Varun Aaron each bagged two wickets.
