Pakistan has requested the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to provide finance for the construction of transmission lines from Jamshoro-Rahimyar Khan and link to Moro-Dadu, to cover the construction of grid station on 152 acres in Moro (Sindh) and the installation of a 500 kV transmission line to help fulfill the overall objective of the MFF to encourage economic growth and improve transmission efficiency by creating a series of national improvements.
In Initial Environmental Examination report of "MFF Power Transmission Enhanc-ement Investment Programme - Proposed Tranche-3" which was prepared by National Transmission and Despatch Company for the Asian Development Bank revealed that the improved transmission efficiency will contribute to expansion of economic opportunities by improving capacity and efficiency and security of supply in Sindh and Punjab provinces of Pakistan.
The proposed sub project aims at interconnection of generating facilities that are under development and are based South of Dadu/Jamshoro/Hyderabad. The output of Independent Power Plants (IPP) based on imported coal and on imported LPG will be made available, through proposed 500 kV lines to the entire system and will have impact on load centers elsewhere than Sindh.
According to the recent survey in October 2011, no built-up structures remain affected, as all the formerly affected 117 structures have now successfully been avoided by NTDC by inserting diversions in 20 reaches of the transmission line.
It may be recalled that the Power Transmission Enhancement MFF loan has already been approved by ADB and the sub project under consideration falls under tranche-3 of the MFF. The total cost of the Moro Grid Station (GS) and transmission line (TL) is estimated at US$ 288 million. ADB will fund the design, civil works and procurement of equipment. The project involves the construction of a new 500 kV GS at Moro and 585 km of single circuit transmission lines from Jamshoro-Moro-Rahimyar Khan with link to Moro-Dadu. The detailed designs are currently being progressed. Land has been acquired for GS and is under the ownership of NTDC. There are a total of 1,603 towers. The foundations of 846 towers were constructed in 1996-97.
Compensation of crops and trees will be paid for the crops on the land that can accommodate the construction of remaining 757 towers and construction of transmission lines form Jamshoro to Rahimyar Khan with link to Moro-Dadu.
Report mentioned that the condition of the power transmission system in Pakistan is inadequate to meet the rapidly growing demand for electrical power. This situation limits national development and economic growth. To enable the transmission system to deliver newly added generating capacity the existing network has to be expanded.
The project will involve construction of one new grid sub-station of 500 kV at Moro and 500 kV single circuit 585.28 km transmission lines. The transmission lines will require total 1,603 towers.
