Heavy rain is expected in Brazil's main southern soyabean producing states over the weekend, and important center-west states will get widespread rainfall later next week, local forecasters Somar said on Friday. Planting has started in the early-planting center-west states despite the absence of widespread rains. Growers in isolated areas of the No 1 soya producing state of Mato Grosso in the region have seen sufficient showers to begin planting.
And forecasts of widespread rains between October 14 and 17 will likely hasten planting in Mato Grosso and Goias in the coming days in anticipation of the typical spread of moisture across the center-west this time of year. Farmers began planting soya in late September in the center-west and will continue into December in the south. Heavy rains are forecast for the next five days in the main southern states, No 2 soya producer Parana and No 3 Rio Grande do Sul. Parana is well advanced in planting. Over 5 percent of its expected crop had been sown by the start of this week.
Parana is due to get 113 millimetres (4.3 inches) of rain over the next five days. Rio Grande do Sul, which typically does not plant until November, will see 78 mm through the weekend, Somar data showed. The soil moisture will help germination when planting starts and help weather some shorter dry spells if they befall the region in the coming weeks.
Mato Grosso will get 15-17 millimetres over the next few days in isolated showers. The western part of the state has been planting aggressively with more regular rains showing up in that region. Early next week, the southern soya areas of the state are to see increased moisture, Somar said. No 4 soya producer Goias is due to see some showers over the weekend and into early next week as well. "Between October 14-17, more widespread rain will return to Mato Grosso and Goias, as cold fronts continue to advance into Brazil," Somar said in a 10-day extended forecast.
