Eid preparations have reached at climax and sweet sellers in the twin cities are now waiting for the buyers to sell their traditional recipes and sweets. Food plays a central role in the festivities and the days leading up to Eid-ul-Fitr are among the busiest of the year for sweet makers across the country. Majority of people exchange Mithais as gifts with their loved ones and serve dessert to the guests on the occasion which add charm to the festival.
"We always exchange Eid gifts and sweets on Eid-ul-Fitr among our class fellows, relatives and neighbours as these are the most joyous moments of Eid," A young boy Hassan said. Carrot halwa, rus gullay, gulab jaman and burfis are the most popular sweets among people, which are usually exchanged on the occasion of Eid. However, a variety of cakes flavoured with coffee, pineapple, chocolate, vanilla, moose, strawberry and almond have also become popular among younger generation and children and also exchanged on Eid.
Although, a huge rush of customers can be witnessed at every sweet corner in the city but on the other hand, the rising prices and inflation has also affected people badly limiting their buying capacity.
Besides, traditional sweet dishes are prepared at home by females. "My mother always cooked vermicelli on the Eid day as served it as a first meal which is liked by both young and old ones in our family, a class IV student Fatima said excitedly. "Eid-ul-Fitr is all about bangles, henna and sweet. We always visit market on Chaand Raat for buying bangles and applying henna and my mother and aunt cook sweets the whole night before Eid.
