ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly's Standing Committee on Federal Education and Professional Training Wednesday recommended that the budget of Prime Minister's Fee Reimbursement Scheme for less developed areas be increased to Rs 6 billion.

The committee made the recommendation during a meeting held here at the IIUI new campus with by Col (R) Dr Amirullah Marwat when it was told by Federal Minister for Education Engr Muhammad Baligh-ur-Rehman Baligh-ur-Rehman that enrollment of students in universities had increased due to the reimbursement scheme.

Besides committee members, Secretary Committee Walayat Khan, IIUI Rector Dr Masoom Yasinzai, IIUI President Dr Ahmed Yousif Al-Dariweesh, QAU vice chancellor and other senior officials of the Islamic International University Islamabad also attended the meeting, a press release said.

Minister Baligh-ur-Rehman informed the committee that at present some annual budget of the PM's reimbursement scheme was Rs 2 billion, which had produced positive results.

The committee also tasked the IIUI to work for legislation regarding alcohol through its Islamic Research Institute (IRI) and other constituent units and assured that the already drafted work on the issue would be shared with it.

Committee chairman Dr Amir Ullah lauded IIUI for its services and ongoing projects. He said research projects at the universities must be result oriented. There should be no nepotism and favoritism in educational institutions, he added.

The minister said the Higher Education Commission (HEC) had established ORIC departments in 70 universities.

IIUI Rector Dr Masoom Yasinzai briefed the committee about strengths, achievements, legal framework, budget and futuristic outlook of the university.

The committee also discussed issue of encroachment at the land of Quaid-e-Azam University.
