Chief Justice Lahore High Court Justice Ijaz Ahmed Chaudhry has constituted a special bench to dispose of pending tax related cases involving billions of stuck up arrears of income tax, sales tax and federal excise duty.
Sources told Business Recorder here on Saturday that the FBR Member Inland Revenue Service (IRS) Khawar Khurshid Butt on Saturday held a meeting with Chief Justice Lahore High Court and requested him to constitute special bench to clear pending cases at the level of the courts on priority basis.
Sources said that the Chief Justice of LHC assured the FBR Member IR that a special bench has been constituted which will start working from September 12, 2011 and on every Friday it will hear pending cases of taxes in the High Court. The FBR would extend all out support for disposing of the cases on immediate basis as the legal team of the Board would appear before the special bench on every Friday from September 12 onwards.
The total stuck up arrears of nearly Rs 122 billion are pending before the courts. The constitution of special bench of the LHC is a major development, which would be instrumental in disposing of hundreds of cases pertaining to sales tax, income tax and the FED.
FBR Member IR has also issued instructions to the Chief Commissioners of Large Taxpayer Unit (LTU) Lahore and Regional Tax Offices to pursue cases of tax disputes at the level of the courts and approach the special bench of the LHC for early hearing and disposal of cases for recovery of the arrears.
