Advocate General Punjab, Khwaja Haris on Tuesday apprised the Supreme Court that Haris Afzal, son of Sheikh Afzal, main accused of rupees nine billion Bank of Punjab (BoP) loan scam, is creating hindrance for the Salvation Committee tasked to recover the embezzled amount.
He told the three-member bench headed by Justice Mian Shakirullah Jan during the hearing of a civil miscellaneous application, that Haris Afzal had agreed before the committee to sell out properties and pay the amount but so far he is creating hurdles. He said that former Justice Jamshed Ali Shah, chairman of the Committee, had sent requests twice for recusal. He further said that Haris secretly tried to sell out properties abroad, which he had promised to surrender. His efforts were stopped when he sent verification of documents to the foreign office, which forwarded it to the NAB (National Accountability Bureau), the AG added.
Justice Jawwad S. Khwaja questioned Awais Ahmed, counsel for Haris, as to why he had written a letter to the Court and asked him to realise its implications. He replied that his client had declined to have written such letter, however, he would contact him and like to submit a reply over the issue. Justice Khwaja remarked that such things would not be allowed. The bench adjourned further hearing till August 16 after allowing the request of counsel for Afzal to submit a reply over the issue.
