THE RUPEE: dollar down

Published Updated

The rupee moved up on the currency market on Tuesday during the smooth supply of dollars, dealers said. The rupee maintained firm trend versus the US currency, gaining seven paisa for buying at 86.40 and rose by six paisa for selling at 86.45, they said.
INTERBANK MARKET RATES: In the second Asian trade Swiss franc surged to an all-time high against euro as investors' confidence was shattered by extended falls in share prices, prompting them to flock to safe haven currencies. The yen advanced while dollar strengthened versus commodity currencies as Wall Street's biggest sell-off since December 2008 prompted a massive flight to safety, but wariness over possible intervention made investors cautious about testing yen to record high levels.
Risk-related currencies found some respite after Asian bourses bounced off intraday lows with Tokyo's stock market trimming losses to 1.7 percent from more than four percent and Seoul shares recouping more than a half of more than eight percent intraday falls.
Indian rupee was trading at Rs 44.97 versus dollar, Malaysian ringgit was at 3.0440 in terms of the greenback and Chinese yuan was at 6.4414 in relation to the US currency.
OPEN MARKET RATES: The rupee stayed put against the US currency for buying and selling at 86.15 and 86.35, they added. The rupee managed to gain in relation to euro, rising 81 paisa for buying at Rs 122.53 and rose by 80 paisa for selling at Rs 123.03, they said.
