The unemployment rate has jumped to 6 percent in the country during 2010-11 from 5.6 percent in 2009-10 with joblessness in urban areas mounting to 8.8 percent, according to statistics of labour survey conducted by the Federal Bureau of Statistics.
The indicators distributed among the media on Tuesday at a news conference on inflation revealed male unemployment rate has gone up from 4.4 percent in 2009-10 to 5.1 percent in 2010-11 however, number of jobless females has declined from 9.5 percent in 2009-10 to 8.9 percent in 2010-11.
Analysis of data showed that joblessness was on the rise in urban area with unemployment rate going up from 7.7 percent in 2009-10 to 8.8 percent in 2010-11. The number of unemployed males in urban areas has gone up from 5.3 percent in 2009-10 to 7.1 percent in 2010-11 whereas unemployment rate of females in urban areas has declined from 20.8 per cent in 2009-10 to 20.7 in 2010-11.
However, unemployment rate in the rural areas has slightly declined from 4.8 percent a year ago to 4.7 percent with female unemployment rate decreasing from 7.2 percent during 2009-10 to 6.4 percent in 2010-11 whereas male unemployment rate in rural area also increased from 3.9 percent a year ago to 4 percent in 2010-11. The crude productively rate in the country also declined from 33 percent in 2009-10 to 32.8 percent in 2010-11. The crude productivity rate in rural area has declined from 34.5 percent in 2009-10 to 34.3 percent in 2010-11 and remained unchanged 30 percent in urban areas. The agriculture sector is providing employment to 45.1 percent of the total employed persons whereas industry was providing jobs to 21 percent. The ability of service sector to provide employment has dwindled from 34.1 percent a year ago to 33.7 per cent in 2010-11.
The indicators showed that literacy rate has slightly improved from 57.7 percent a year ago to 58.5 percent in 2010-11 with male literacy going up from 69.5 to 70.2 percent and female literacy from 45.2 percent to 46.3 percent in the country.
The literacy rate in rural area increased from 49.2 percent in 2009-10 to 50.2 percent in 2010-11 with male literacy going up from 63.6 percent to 64.5 percent and female 34.2 percent to 35.6 percent. Literacy rate in urban area increased from 73.2 percent a year ago to 73.7 percent in 2010-11 with male literacy increasing from 80.2 to 80.5 percent and female literacy going up from 65.5 percent to 66.4 percent in 2010-11.
