No electricity was supplied to Textile industry throughout Tuesday by the Pakistan Electric Power Company (Pepco) Discos after a dearth in power supply owing to both technical and financial reasons. The industry sources told that the Pepco announcement of partial curtailment proved false, as the authority relied heavily on industry load to meet with domestic consumers need on first of Ramazan.
They added that the Pepco has failed to ensure required generation of electricity due to less than due indent from the Indus River System Authority (Irsa) on the one hand and denial of fuel supply by the PSO due to non-payment of its dues. Pepco sources said payment could not be made due to bank holiday. The Pepco authorities have failed to ensure a foolproof arrangement for the holy month of Ramadan.
Interestingly, Pepco had announced zero loadshedding during Sehri and Iftar, which proved false. Majority of Lahore city witnessed a complete blackout during the very first Sehri. Not only this but majority of the areas in the province of Punjab were plunged into darkness during Taraweeh.
The Pepco DG Ejaz Qureshi said early morning thunderstorm affected 5KVA line, transmitting electricity to the city. However, what happened throughout the day was more suspicious, as majority of textile industry was denied supply of electricity against earlier announcement of 25 percent share utilisation for domestic consumers. It may be noted that the textile industry has witnessed a complete blackout in a situation when the SNGPL is observing twice a week gas loadshedding to the industry.
Resultantly, majority of the units remained closed throughout Tuesday with no clue about the future prospects of electricity during rest of Ramazan. However, the Pepco sources said the situation is likely to improve ahead, as payment to PSO would be made early Wednesday that would ensure smooth fuel supply to the thermal units.
