The value of Vietnam's exports in June reached a record high of $8.46 billion, which helped narrow the monthly trade deficit to $160 million, the customs department said on Tuesday, revising down a government estimate of $400 million.
The revised deficit brought the six-month trade gap to $6.44 billion, below the $6.65 billion estimated by the General Statistics Office (GSO) last month , the customs department said in a report.
It put June imports at $8.62 billion, compared with the GSO's estimate of $8.2 billion.
In April Vietnam had its highest trade deficit since December 2009, when it stood at $1.93 billion. The GSO, run by the Planning and Investment Ministry, often releases trade data during the last week of each month, giving estimated exports and imports for the whole month, while the customs figures are actual values.
Exports between January and June reached $43.06 billion, up 32.6 percent from a year before, and imports in the period rose 27.1 percent to $49.5 billion, the report said.
Vietnam's trade deficit this year will widen to between $14 billion and $14.5 billion, up more than 10 percent from 2010, despite stronger-than-expected growth in export revenue, the government said early this month.
