Benchmark copper closed lower on Thursday, on disappointment with weak US economic data and a mild retreat in the euro as concerns about Greek fiscal woes persisted. "Are we slowing down? If so, how slow do we go? What about Chinese demand? There's just a lot of uncertainty at the moment and this has the markets in a range," said Frank Lesh, broker and futures analyst with Future Path Trading in Chicago.
In New York, copper received a late boost as Wall Street stocks rebounded, helping the July COMEX copper contract to eke out a 0.40 cent gain to end at $4.1110 per lb. In earlier trade, July COMEX copper had swooned as much as 3.55 cents.
