The Lahore High Court (LHC) here on Friday directed Shalimar TMO to appear in person and explain his position on the issue of falling of trees from a green belt in Shadbagh Scheme-II area for establishing a food street. Earlier, a counsel appeared on behalf of the TMO Shalimar but could not answer the court's queries on the matter, therefore, court summoned the TMO in person.
The court expressed its displeasure and said the government departments were not aware of their responsibilities, which forced the courts to summon chief secretary and inspector general of police Punjab to know what was happening in the province. Hearing of the petition challenging the setting up a food street by falling trees in Shadbagh area adjourned for a week.
The Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) had already informed the court that it was not establishing any food street in the area by removing green belt or trees. It said there were at least 400 trees in the area and the authority had no plan to cut even one of them.
An ex-Naib Nazim of the area Hafiz Moen Ahmad filed the petition through Advocate Muhamamd Azhar Siddique submitting that Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) removed green belt in the area and decided to convert it into restaurant and food street in sheer violation of superior court's orders. He said such action was violation of fundamental rights and local government ordinance 2001 and other relevant laws. He requested the court to set aside the order of setting up food street and to restore the green belt.
