The family of a Indonesian politician who died at one of Citibank's branches Thursday filed a three trillion rupiah ($348 million) lawsuit against the bank's US headquarters, a lawyer said. "We filed a lawsuit at the Central Jakarta Court this morning against Citibank in New York seeking damages of three trillion rupiah," family lawyer OC Kaligis told AFP.
"Citibank should be made responsible for the death, too," he said. Politician Irzen Octa, 50, died at a branch in Jakarta late last month during a meeting with debt collectors. South Jakarta district police chief Gatot Edi Pramono earlier this month said blood had been found on a curtain and wall inside the meeting room where Octa was last seen alive with two Citibank staff and two debt collectors.
He said the politician, who was disputing a $12,000 credit card debt, was later seen alone on the floor with saliva coming from his mouth. Police have arrested four people on maltreatment charges. Citibank Indonesia previously denied that Octa was physically harmed at one of their offices, adding also that the bank was committed to operating with the highest standards. Besides the debt collecting case, police are probing allegations of embezzlement by a staff member in Citibank Indonesia.
