Sindh Abadgar Board (SAB) has suggested number of suggestions on taxes; repair of embankments, withholding taxes and on wheat purchase during the board's monthly meeting held under the chairmanship of Abdul Majeed Nizamani.
The business committee of Sindh Abadgar Board showed their great concern over imposition of taxes on agriculture sector. According to the committee the annual investment on fertiliser, agriculture machinery, pesticides and seeds equals to about 300 billion.
The new taxes imposed on this sector equal to Rs 55 billion. The members of the meeting observed that only three months ago the price of urea was Rs 850/ now it jumped to Rs 1200/ after announcement of presidential ordinance. It is surprising to note that the price of urea in India is Rs 481/ and in Pakistan it has been fixed as Rs 1200/.
The price of DAP in India is Rs 1000/ and we have Rs 4000. Nizamani expressed his concern on the difference of price in India and Pakistan being 1:4. Ultimately this would leads to low agriculture output due to unfavourable prices of fertiliser and pesticides. He further said that our country exports cotton, rice and other agricultural products to earn foreign exchange.
The committee further said that increase of oil prices would further affect agricultural production. Considering the above facts Sindh Abadgar Board on behalf of Sindh growers demanded that the taxes imposed on fertilizers, pesticides, hybrid seeds and agriculture machinery should be withdrawn immediately and the input prices of cotton and rice should also be reduced to protect the sector.
