Divergent trend was witnessed on the currency market on Monday as the rupee performed on both sides during the session, dealers said. The rupee gained two paisa in relation to dollar for buying at 85.38 and picked up three paisa for selling at 85.42, they said.
INTERBANK MARKET RATES: In the first Asian trade euro hit fresh 11-month highs against a broadly weaker yen and held firm against dollar with markets all but certain the European Central Bank will raise interest rates this week. In contrast, the Bank of Japan is likely to downgrade its economic assessment at its meeting on Wednesday and may consider finding more ways to help the economy recover from last month's massive earthquake and devastating tsunami.
Indian rupee was trading at Rs 44.59 versus dollar, Malaysian ringgit was available at 3.0245 in terms of the US currency and Chinese yuan was at 6.547in relation to the greenback.
OPEN MARKET RATES: The rupee shed five paisa in relation to dollar for buying and selling at 85.20 and 85.340, they added. The rupee followed the same print versus euro, losing 20 paisa for buying and selling at Rs 120.74 and Rs 121.24, they said.

RUPEE IN LAHORE: The rupee gained five paisa against dollar at Lahore currency market on Monday. According to dealers, dollar resumed trading at overnight Rs 85.15 and Rs 85.35 as buying and selling rates, respectively. It ended lower at Rs 85.10 and Rs 85.30 on buying and selling sides, respectively.
However, the rupee remained under pressure against pound sterling, which was purchased and sold at Rs 137.00 and Rs 137.70 as compared to previous Rs 136.50 and Rs 137.30, respectively, dealers said.
RUPEE IN ISLAMABAD AND RAWALPINDI: The dollar remained unchanged against the rupee at the open currency markets of Islamabad and Rawalpindi here on Monday.
The dollar resumed trading at Rs 85.30 (buying) and Rs 85.40 (selling) against same last rate. It did not observe further change in the evening session and closed at Rs 85.30 (buying) and Rs 85.40 (selling).
Pound Sterling opened at Rs 136.40 (buying) and Rs 137.50 (selling) against same previous rate. It did not witness any change in the evening session and closed at Rs 136.40 (buying) and Rs 137.50 (selling).
