A Syrian worker was shot and wounded Sunday while taking part in a protest to support the regime of Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad in the Christian area of the Lebanese capital. According to Lebanese police a passenger in a passing car shot at the Syrian protesters while they were demonstrating in the Christian area of Nabaa, in east Beirut.
The demonstrator was shot in the stomach and was taken to a local hospital, the police said.
Syrian workers held several demonstrations Sunday in favour of the regime.
Some 150 protesters demonstrated earlier in front of the Syrian embassy amid heavy security.
Other protests were organised in the west Beirut Sunni neighbourhood of Tarek Jadidah, a stronghold of followers of the late premier Rafik Hariri. Some residents were reported to have thrown stones and tomatoes at the protesters, forcing the Lebanese army to intervene before the situation got out of hand.
