Copper climbed to within 3.5 percent of its all-time peak on Thursday, bucking general commodity weakness and another large build in London inventories and instead reflecting its role as a main beneficiary of global demand growth. COMEX March copper on the New York Mercantile Exchange jumped 7.15 cents, or 1.7 percent, to settle at $4.3385 per lb, near the upper end of its $4.2755 to $4.3555 session range.
