Chairman Senate Farooq H. Naek has said that our fight against terrorism and unprecedented natural disasters, such as last year's monsoon floods, have exacerbated our economic challenges, but we are determined to overcome these difficulties through sustained efforts, sound management, financial discipline and consistent reforms.
He was talking to a 10-member delegation of Commonwealth Parliamentary Association-UK Branch led by Roger Gale, MP who called on chairman senate at Parliament House, here on Thursday afternoon. While apprising the delegation on the damage and devastation caused by floods in Pakistan, Naek said it was the biggest human tragedy in the history of Pakistan, saying they left the entire agriculture sector in shambles, devastating livestock while standing crops worth billion of dollar were destroyed.
He added that the victims of this immense tragedy need solidarity, concrete help and assistance from the world community. He also said that commonwealth parliamentarians must work together to achieve inter-faith harmony among people. He further said that promoting respect and mutual understanding between communities, faiths and ethnic groups within commonwealth countries and beyond is necessary for peaceful co-existence in the world. On the occasion, he underscored the need for enhanced exchange of parliamentary delegations between the two countries to promote people-to-people contacts.
Chairman senate thanked UK for support and assistance provided by them in the wake of unprecedented floods. He also appreciated UK's development assistance programme for Pakistan. Head of the delegation Roger Gale, MP and members of the delegation thanked chairman senate for a warm welcome and hospitality extended to them and assured all possible help and assistance in consolidating Pakistan - UK relations.-PR
