Confusion prevails among the top brass of Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) as the World Bank (WB) mission expressed dissatisfaction over the performance of auditors, Business Recorder learnt on Friday. According to sources, the WB mission during its recent visit had expressed concerns over the performance of the auditors.
They said that the mission stressed the board to improve the performance of auditors as the audit is a key tax administration function that needs to be enhanced to plug revenue leakages. Sources said it has been suggested to the board to arrange short training programs for auditors to boost their performance. They said that the mission was of the view that the performance of the auditors was not up to the mark because of long absence of field audits. Hence the skills of the auditors needed to be refreshed through training programs.
Sources said the method of computerised random ballot, which was an attempt to maintain transparency in audit process by selecting cases without human involvement, had failed to deliver the desired results as the system was not updated for the purpose. Therefore, the mission, besides recommending to the board to update its IT system in order to validate returns, indicate potential problems and select the cases for audit, has urged FBR to assign the audit cases to the auditors through updated IT system to maintain transparency in the process, they added.
