As many as 29,000 cases of drawback are lying pending only due to the deficiencies in filing of cases and non co-operative attitude of commercial banks, said Wasim Ahmad, Assistant Director, Foreign Exchange operation Department, State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), Faisalabad.
Addressing an orientation seminar, organised for the staff dealing in drawback claims by Pakistan Textile Exporters Association, here on Thursday, Wasim said that SBP is making strenuous efforts for quick disposal of drawback claims but there is acute shortage of staff and existing workforce has to work beyond official hours to clear the backlog.
He said that though provision of master bill of lading is imperative, a large number of cases are filed without adhering to this formality. He added that exporter staff is also unaware of the procedure and formalities necessary for processing of drawback claims which is yet another bottleneck.
The SBP representative was also critical of the non co-operative attitude of commercial banks, saying the bank has decided to arrange seminars to raise awareness among the exporters. This, he added, would help in early processing and quick disposal of cases.
Answering a question raised by the participants regarding delay in clearing pending claims, Wasim clarified that it is only due to non-allocation of funds by the ministry of finance. However efforts have now been expedited to clear the backlog, as funds are now available with SBP, he added.
He asked the exporters staff to contact him personally in case of any problem in drawback claims filing. He appreciated Pakistan Textile Exporters Association for arranging seminar to benefit exporters to ensure their role in promoting textile exports of the country. A large number of exporters and staff attended the seminar.
