Delay in road construction: LHC seeks report from authorities by January 17

Lahore High Court Chief Justice, Ijaz Ahmad Chaudhry here Thursday sought report by January 17 from Secretary Communication and Works and Gujranwala Electric Power Company (Gepco) in a petition questioning delay in the widening of Shakargarh-Narowal Road.
Shakargarh Bar Association president filed the petition, submitting that frontier works organisation (FWO) was given a rupees 969 million contract in year 2009 to widen the said road.
He said the project was to be completed by August 05, 2011 but the snail pace of work reflects that the project could not be accomplished till the deadline. He alleged that the FWO has spent only Rs12 million out of Rs130 million given by the government as advance payment. The petitioner further said that at least 80 percent work is still to be completed, as Gepco has still not removed electricity poles from the road.
The petitioner said the residents of Shakargh/Narowal are facing enormous problems due to the delay in the project, as they have no alternate road to travel out to their homes.
