The average price of Bangladeshi teas rose 1.59 percent to 195.72 taka ($2.76) per kg despite lower overseas demand at the weekly auction on Tuesday, brokers said. Some 1.33 million kg were sold, leaving 16.49 percent of the offer to be carried back.
Bangladeshi buyers, including exporters mainly to the Commonwealth of Independent States and Pakistan, participated in the auction, held in the country's lone auction centre in the main port city Chittagong. "A strong domestic demand helped average price rise despite lower export inquiry," said an official of National Brokers Limited, the largest tea broking firm in the country.
Different grades were sold between 165 taka and 229 taka per kg in the auction. But in an exclusive sale some 500 kg of Red Dust realised the highest price of 264 taka per kg. The next auction will be held on Tuesday, January 11, with more than 1.69 million kg on offer.
