A complete shutdown was observed, here on Friday, in the district after Jummah prayers on the call of religious parties against any move to amend blasphemy laws. All shopping centres and markets were closed as traders took part in a protest rally.
The main rally was taken out from the central mosque which was led by local traders and clerics including Maulana Mohammad Salim, Mufti Mohammad Shafi, Allama Khalid, Maulana Mohammad Khiyat, Malik Javed, Mohammad Hussain, Umar Draz, Mir Hussain, Adil Qureshi and others.
The protesters raised slogans against any possible amendment in the blasphemy laws. They said they would stop the campaign against the government forthwith if assured of no amendment into the law. Addressing the protestors, speakers cautioned that any change in the blasphemy law would hurt the sentiments of the people.
They vowed that all parties are united on a platform on a single agenda to protect the sanctity of Khatam-e-Nabuwwat (SAW). The rally culminated at Qanwan Chowk. It was observed that presence of the common man in the rally was low as compared to past rallies organised on the call of religious parties.
