South Korean shares close 3.72 percent higher

Published Updated

SEOUL: South Korean shares closed 3.72 percent higher Thursday after major central banks joined in a coordinated action to provide liquidity to financial markets.

The benchmark KOSPI closed up 68.67 points at 1,916.18.

Buying heated up in afternoon trade, triggering the Korea Exchange to halt programmed trading for five minutes.

Domestic institutions and foreign investors aggressively bought stocks amid a broad-based rally in Asia following the move by the US Federal Reserve, the European Central Bank and the central banks of Japan, Britain, Switzerland and Canada.

Dealers said China's decision to cut its bank reserve requirement ratio for the first time in more than three years also boosted sentiment.

Gains were broad-based, led by brokerages and oil refiners. Woori Investment & Securities skyrocketed by the daily limit of 14.07 percent to 11,350 won.
