The earning of Pakistan Postal Service (PPS) has shown an unprecedented rise of around 25 percent in its revenue earning for 2008-09,swelling total income to Rs 7.7 billion, Director General Pakistan Post Muhammad Ahmed Ahmed Mian said.
"In spite of financial crunch and international recession, PPS has been able to record an increase in revenue from Rs 6.2 billion (2007-08) to Rs 7.7 billion during 2008-09", in an interview with APP he said on Monday. He said that registering an increase of 25 percent, which even surpassed the target, fixed by ministry of finance for 2008-09. "This is a credible achievement for a public sector organisation like us", he remarked.
He said during current financial year, the revenue target has been fixed as Rs 9.3 billion for which an action plan is already in place. "It is pertinent to mention that during the last nine years, there was no postage tariff revision whereas operational cost had increased by 400 percent during the period," he added.
He said that World Postal Industry must seriously look at ways to become climate neutral as we deliver 430 billion letters and 6 billion parcels world-wide each year, and operating over 600,000 postal establishments as many vehicles makes it a significant producer of greenhouse gas.
He said that the organisation is successfully discharging the responsibilities entrusted by the government relating to Benazir Income Support Programme under which, so far Rs 19 billion has been disbursed among 2.2 million beneficiaries through 8 million money orders.
"Likewise under Punjab Food Support Programme over Rs 10 billion have been disbursed among 1.3 million beneficiaries through 9 million money orders," D.G added. Muhammad Ahmed Mian said that Information Technology driven approach has been launched to computerise various operations for bringing improvement in the efficiency.
He said in line to offer great convenience for the public, the transport infrastructure is being restrengthened to accelerate movement of mail and cash through motorised delivery. He said that Pakistan Post despite these limitations increased its revenue from Rs 4 billion (2000-1) to Rs 7.7 billion (2008-09) without adding any further establishment of building infrastructure. However, he advocated that still there is a need to expand the network.
