NBP President Syed Ali Raza made a passionate appeal to the business community to come forward and play their role in resurrection of sports in Pakistan.
In his presidential speech at the prize distribution ceremony of the 1st Wallis Mathais Memorial Cricket tournament organised by KCCA with the sponsorship of NBP, he recounted Pakistan's major achievements in Cricket, Hockey, Squash, as well as the super performances of athletes Abdul Khaliq, Ghulam Raziq, Muhammad Iqbal, Muhammad Nawaz and Mubark Shah in international contests during the seventies.
He said that the neighbouring country has come forward with new vistas for financial support to the sportsmen, and their teams are also progressing well on the sports field, whereas we have not exploited our resources and talents as yet to raise teams worthy of bringing back the pride to Pakistan. Raza paid rich tributes to Wallis Mathais for his services to Pakistan and also for the National Bank of Pakistan and announced that the tournament will be held regularly every year.
He commended NBP Sports Chief Iqbal Qasim Sports Committee Secretary Qamar Hussain, Officers Association General Secretary Gulfaraz Khan, and the KCCA for their joint venture to make the Wallis Mathais Tournament a resounding success. On the request of Munir Hussain former President KCCA, Syed Ali Raza announced for payment of Rs 250,000 for the benefit of the family of the legendary Pakistan football player late Turab Ali.
Provincial Minister for Sports Dr Muhammad Ali Shah (who is also the President of KCCA) was the chief guest on the occasion. Mr Rashid Rabani, a former NBP Director and now Advisor to Sindh Chief Minister, said that NBP stands out as an organisation for records of service to Sports and culture as well.
He assured full support of the PPP's government for the nation building endeavours of National Bank of Pakistan. KCCA Secretary Syed Sirajul Islam Bukhari, Commentator Munir Hussain and KCCA Zone-III Chairman Mushir Rabani also addressed the function. NBP Sports Consultant Ghulam Muhammad Khan conducted the proceedings. The function held at NBP Sports Complex was largely attended by the Bank officials, sportsmen and prominent people of the city.-PR
